Together
since February 2001, Bachelor Red is chock full of talented
Atlanta music scene veterans. Front lady Rebecca Gauthier leads
the band with her classically trained pipes (Berklee College
of Music) and well-developed stage chops. Lead guitarist Mike
Schmeelk (formerly of the Pleasantdales), drummer Alex Pilson,
formerly of Shrunken Head, and bassist Adam Howard form the
rest of this band who deliver well-crafted, roots-based pop
songs. Check out their self-titled EP for a good example of
what I mean. One listen to "Reconsider" or "Starfish" and you'll
agree that the band is headed in the right direction.

Bachelor
Red's five song EP is a heady blast of mainstream rock, with
some subtle, jangly, Americana accents. They neatly walk the
line between arena-rock dynamics, pop melodies and an intimate,
Americana feel with Gauthier's voice a versatile part of the
sound.

Bachelor
Red "Sister Act"
Ever
wonder about the road not taken? Rebecca Gauthier, the lead singer
for Bachelor Red, has no such doubts. Dropping out of University
of Connecticut, this native Bostonian took off for Spain, finishing
her higher education in Seville. In her three years abroad, she
converted to Buddhism and was living in a monastery when her spiritual
advisor asked her to move to Atlanta to start a Buddhist Center.
Finding herself in the South for the first time, this classically
trained vocalist from Berklee College of Music revived her music
career, ditched celibacy, and hooked up with local producer Rick
Beato who helped form the band in 2002. Their self-titled, 5 track
EP receive critical praise. As Steve Craig from 99X explains, "Rebecca's
vocals fold into her band in a perfect power-pop blend." Skip
forward to 2003, with two new faces on the strings, Bachelor Red
is excited about the new dynamics of the band. "This coming
year is a re-birth...we have an edgier rock sound, more in your
face."
With their high
profile gig on the 99X Locals Only stage at Music Midtown, Bachelor
Red hopes their pop/rock act will win over fans as well as major
record labels. Asked by JEZ about the prospects of getting a major
record deal, Alex Pilson, the band's drummer, cautiously remarks,
"While that might be great, we won't compromise our dignity...hopefully
a label will recognize our song writing ability and overall talent."
Having been
put into rotation on two of the major rock radio stations in town,
99X and 96Rock, it won't be too long until the band realizes their
musical goals;which is for Rebecca, "Making a living as a musician
singing my original songs."

the type of band that you don't need discuss how big the buzz is,
you can simply feel it. In an extremely short time they have risen
up to become one of Atlanta's finest rock acts. Every time we play
